The young adult debut from the award-winning author of Arsenic and Adobo! When a high school tarot reader’s latest client goes missing after a troubling reading, she must apply everything she’s learned from her private investigator mother to solve a case of her own.

“Delightfully layered. The tarot readings bring a fresh and bright angle to this modern mystery. Mia P. Manansala has created an endearing voice in Danika—an intuitive, intelligent, and emotionally sharp amateur sleuth.” —Elle Cosimano, New York Times bestselling author of Finlay Donovan is Killing It

Danika Dizon is a natural problem-solver. Thanks to her private investigator mom and mystery author dad, she's equipped with the skills to offer guidance to anxious classmates who come to her for a tarot reading between classes. For a price, of course.
But when one of her clients vanishes shortly after they're dealt a death card, the girl’s younger sister Gaby begs Danika to figure out what went wrong. Danika takes on the case, thinking it's the perfect way to prove to her parents that she should be an official investigator in the family’s detective agency.
What starts off as a compelling challenge quickly devolves into something darker as Danika and Gaby peel back layer after layer of the secret life the missing girl has been living. A life that those involved would do anything to keep from being revealed…

Gr 9 Up-This delightful young adult mystery blends the wit of Veronica Mars with the candor of Enola Holmes, making for a clever read. At its heart is Danika, a mature high school junior with a deep interest in her mother's work as a private investigator. When she is not helping in her family's agency, Danika reads tarot cards to earn extra money. Then one of her tarot clients goes missing and Danika eagerly takes on the challenge of solving the case, meeting new friends and new romantic possibilities along the way. Unlike many YA novels where parents are absent or uninvolved, Danika has a close and supportive relationship with her family. Growing up in a Filipino household adds depth to her character, and cultural elements-such as Kali, a Filipino martial art, and her father's cooking-are seamlessly woven into the story. The novel also benefits from a strong supporting cast, including her best friends, cousins, and younger brother, who bring warmth and humor to the narrative. Though the mystery itself may not have any shocking twists, the journey is entertaining, and the handling of the love triangle feels unique. The writing is charming, making this an ideal choice for a light summer read or a cozy snow day escape. With its balance of mystery, culture, and coming-of-age themes, this book is a refreshingly pleasant addition to the YA genre, particularly for readers who enjoy smart, determined heroines. VERDICT Recommended for libraries where Karen M. McManus and Maureen Johnson books are popular.-Claire Covington

Grades 7-12 If readers are looking for a fast-paced mystery with a little bit of tarot-reading intrigue, Manansala's YA debut, delivering a gripping story full of twists and tension and starring a main character it's impossible not to root for, is sure to fit the bill. Filipino American Danika Dizon is not your typical high-schooler: she has the fearlessness of a PI, the crimesolving instincts of a classic detective, and just enough confidence (and stubbornness) to take on a case no one else would touch. She also runs a tarot-reading side hustle at school, and when one of her clients disappears after drawing the Death card, Danika doesn't waste any time going after the answers herself. Alongside Gaby, the missing girl's sister, she starts unraveling secret after secret. Among the high-stakes drama and snarky banter, Manansala details plenty of tarot readings, which should delight tarot fans. But it's the fierce, brave, and strong-willed Danika who drives this entertaining mystery, which will keep readers guessing until the last page.
