TOP MODEL • For any boat builder, especially a GRP production boat manufacturer, releasing three new models in as many years is rare, but that’s what Rayglass Boats successfully achieved with the release of its new Rayglass 2400 in June 2026.
Jetboat mission • Canterbury jetboaters are spearheading efforts to preserve a unique and historic piece of New Zealand’s boating and backcountry heritage.

Marine pest of the month
MORE with LESS • In 2018, after some 40 years of operation, Auckland’s Allan Tongs Boatbuilders (ATB) embarked on a risky new strategy. It switched production to a single design – the 13.5m Elite AT43 launch – aimed at a niche market. Eight years on, the Covid hiccup notwithstanding, it has launched 11 vessels (hull #12 is fresh from the mould) with two more scheduled for 2027.
SOLID SILVER • No doubt, yacht broker Steve Raea has a keen eye for a vessel’s potential, and nothing excites him more than a tired but sound New Zealand-designed and constructed yacht.
Never too shallow for soft-baits • Snapper are where you find them, and sometimes that is in the shallows – really shallow, shallows!
ELITE COMPANY • Smuggler Marine is well known for its range of high-quality rigid inflatable boats, available both as conventional RIBs and with amphibious drives for go-anywhere capability. Always built to an impeccable standard, these boats are available in Centre Console, Mid-Cabin and Super Sport bowrider configurations.
Just Launched: Catalyst Chase 50 • Lloyd Stevenson Boatbuilders recently launched its 75th custom build, the Catalyst 50 Django Shade. Successful sea trials have been completed and shipping was scheduled for mid-June.

The Volunteer father • In 1916 24-year-old Auckland solicitor Trentham Charles Webster (known as ‘Charles’) was one of 80 men chosen to be sent to England to train to become RNVR sub-lieutenants.
